🏆 Mac's Top 5 Picks for Family-of-6 This Summer
Picked for impact, kid-friendliness, and not breaking the bank on a 6-person trip.
- Yosemite 2-night anchor (Tenaya Lodge, south entrance). Drive 6h or fly LAX→FAT in 1h 30m. Hits Edwina's seed pick + family-friendly resort. ~$3,500-5,000 (2 rooms, 2 nights, drive)
- Big Bear weekend cabin. 2h drive, alpine slide + pontoon boat + MTB. Easiest of the alpine options for a quick getaway. ~$1,800-3,000 (cabin, 2 nights, activities)
- San Diego + Coronado 2-day with Hotel del. La Jolla seals, beach, USS Midway. The default "everyone wins" choice. ~$2,800-4,500 (Hotel del 2 rooms, 1 night)
- SF weekend → Mt Tam hike + Sausalito dinner (Edwina's pick). Fly LAX→SFO Sat, hike Sun, fly back. Honor Edwina's send. ~$3,000-4,500 (flights + Cavallo Point or 1 Hotel SF)
- Catalina Island day trip from Long Beach. 1hr ferry, golf cart Avalon, snorkel Casino Point, ferry back. Cheap + magic. ~$600-900 (ferry + lunch for 6)

📋 Practical Info & Seasonal Notes
What to plan around, what to book ahead, what to skip in July-August.
Peak Weekend Crowds 2026
Three weekends to book around (or strategically embrace):
- Memorial Day: May 23-25, 2026 — first big summer crowd
- July 4: Saturday — biggest crowd weekend of the year. Avoid Yosemite, Tahoe, Big Sur
- Labor Day: Sep 5-7 — last big weekend, often the best weather
Booking Lead Times
When to book what (summer 2026):
- Yosemite in-park lodges: 6-12 months out
- Post Ranch / Amangani / Mt Ada: 6-12 months
- Big Bear cabins (VRBO): 2-3 months for July
- Catalina ferry: 2-4 weeks for summer Saturdays
- Mama's Fish House (Maui): exactly 90 days
Heat Warnings — Skip These in Jul-Aug
Some Western destinations are genuinely dangerous in peak summer:
- Death Valley: 110-130°F. Don't go. Book Nov 2026 or Apr 2027 instead.
- Joshua Tree midday: 105-115°F. Sunrise/sunset hits only.
- Palm Springs day hikes: 100-110°F. Tram is fine (top is 70°F).
- Sedona day hikes: 90-100°F. Dawn starts only.
High-Elevation Notes
Mountain destinations are different beasts:
- Tioga Pass (Yosemite-Mammoth route): typically opens late May/early June
- Mammoth at 8,000 ft: 35-50°F nights even in July
- Aspen at 8,000 ft: afternoon thunderstorms common in July
- Tetons / Yellowstone: book 4-6 months ahead, parking lots fill by 8am
Gas + Desert/Sierra Driving
Long stretches without services on some routes:
- Death Valley gas: fill up in Beatty NV or Lone Pine before entering
- Hwy 395 to Mammoth: gas in Mojave or Bishop
- Yosemite-from-LA route (Hwy 41): fill up in Oakhurst
- Hwy 1 Big Sur: gas at Carmel or Cambria — none in Big Sur itself
Family-of-6 Logistics
Special considerations for 6 people:
- Most hotel suites max at 4. You'll need 2 rooms or a 2-bedroom suite/condo
- VRBO/Airbnb cabins are often a better fit for Big Bear, Tahoe, Mammoth
- Restaurants — call ahead. Most fine-dining caps at 6-8 per table
- SUVs and full-size SUVs are tight for 6 + luggage — consider a minivan rental
Hwy 1 Big Sur — Check Before Going
Recent years have had multiple landslide closures on Hwy 1. Before any Big Sur trip:
- Check Caltrans QuickMap: quickmap.dot.ca.gov
- Some sections require detour via 101 + Hwy 46
- If only northern Big Sur is open: stay at Glen Oaks or Big Sur Lodge
- If only southern Big Sur is open: stay in San Simeon area
June Gloom — Marine Layer
SoCal coast can be foggy/gray June mornings:
- Malibu, Santa Monica, San Diego: morning marine layer Jun-early Jul
- Usually burns off by 11am-1pm
- Santa Barbara is sometimes worse — book later breakfast slots
- September is the warmest, clearest beach month in CA
